NOOKS AND CRANNIES

In the lyrics of many old blues and rock songs there's reference to a character called Boney Moroney. Could anyone tell me if this was a real person? Otherwise, could people post songs with containing the name. I'd love to make a compilation. I've got Patti Smith, AC/DC, Led Zepplin, The Small Faces and I know there must be many, many more.

  • Wilson Pickett's 60s Atlantic soul classic, 'Land of 1000 dances' insists we 'gotta know how to pony like Boney Moroney', so whoever he was, he was good at ponying.

  • Thought there was an REM one - on investigation it turns out to be Falls to Climb, from Up; but it actually says "phony maroney". However, according to another site (http://www.flim.com/remlafaq/up/fallstoclimb.html), the song refers to the Patti Smith song Boney Maroney, so perhaps it does count...

  • The name crops up in many Dr. Feelgood songs.

  • No idea who he was, but the name appears in My Kingdom on Echo & The Bunnymen's album Ocean Rain

  • In "Shake a Tailfeather" on the Blues Brothers OST, it mentions Boney Maroney in a list of different dances (the swim, the duck, the bird etc.), so I guess it might have been an old dance. This would tie in with it being in the Land of 1000 Dances.

  • Yes I am Boney Maroney and I am the deputy leader of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party. Although I was not around when Larry Williams first wrote the song, the name was given to me by Screaming Lord Sutch many years ago. If you want to check my story, go to http://www.omrlp.com and see.
