Aussie thesp Sophie Heathcote died Jan 5 in Connecticut from an aneurism after a long battle with cancer. She was 33.
Heathcote was born in Melbourne and began her career in 1981 on the popular Oz drama series “A Country Practice.”
After this role Heathcote trained at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and graduated in 1994. Soon after graduation came her longest and best-known role as Constable Fiona Cassidy on the harbor-based cop skein “Water Rats.”
During this time Heathcote also had small roles in the films “Reckless Kelly” and “Three Chords and a Wardrobe.” More television followed in the form of young adult skein “Raw FM” and kids program “Pigs Breakfast.” She was also active in legit, playing the lead in the Melbourne Theatre Company’s 1998 production of “The Misanthrope.”

In 2000, Heathcote took on the role of Biddy Marchant in comedy “Grass Roots” on pubcaster the ABC. “Roots” was the work of comic scribe Geoffrey Atherden (“Mother and Son,” “Eggshells”) and won Heathcote an Australian Film Institute award in 2000. Shortly after this accolade she quit acting to concentrate on her natural cosmetics business, Ki, which she founded in 1998.
In 2001 she moved to the United States and sold the Ki business to a French company in 2002.
Heathcote is survived by her husband Chris Clarke, a daughter and a son.
