Our Top 5 For A Top Night

1. Light Fireworks Safely
Did you know that fireworks can travel at speeds of up to 150mph? That's why it's so important to be safe when lighting them. So make sure everyone is standing well back, light the firework and immediately walk away and NEVER go back to check on the firework!

2. Wear gloves when holding sparkles
Children should always be supervised when holding sparklers, but it's also important to make sure that they wear gloves - ideally thick ones which will protect their skin from burns.

3. Don't forget your pet
Bonfire Night can be a stressful time for pets who can find the loud whooshes and bangs frightening. It's best to keep pets indoors and close windows and curtains to reduce noise. Turning on the TV can help distract pets from the loud noises, and if they choose to hide under the bed or other furniture, leave them in peace.

4. Practice bonfire safety
If you're holding a family bonfire party, make sure you don't light your bonfire too close to trees, hedges or other buildings - they should be at least 18m (60ft) away. You'd be surprised how quickly a gust of wind can allow flames to spread, and you don't want to be responsible for setting the neighbourhood on fire!

5. Buy the right fireworks
With so many shops popping up around Bonfire Night selling fireworks, how can you be sure that the fireworks you're buying aren't going to cause an injury? Look for the British Standard Number BS 7114 which ensures the fireworks you're buying have been produced in the UK and meet safety standards. Don't be tempted to buy cheaper, imported fireworks just to save cash - they may not be safe!
